Washington reports project defense costs for the coming year at about 35 billion dollars if fully mobilized. Total nondefense spending could push the overall budget beyond 59 billion, with defense rising to 40 to 50 billion in the next year. A major tax hike is likely, as Treasury balance nears red.

Why no national emergency declared for Korean War
Washington reports that Gen Omar Bradley and National Security Resources Board chair Stuart Symington explained to Congress why there is no formal national emergency or war declaration for Korea. Reasons include UN mission status, existing drafting and economic powers, fear of Soviet use of such a declaration, and WWII emergency powers still in effect due to blocked peace treaties. Attorney General McGrath said senators already know the rationale.

State Will Prove Evans Took Bribe, Says Prosecutor
Sacramento July 28 The prosecutor said he will prove Assemblyman John Evans of Los Angeles was on Pension Promoter Jorge McLain payroll from before the 1949 session until six months after. Evans charged with accepting four $75 bribes. McLain accused of giving the bribes. The trial delayed. O’Shea said McLain tried to push a pension bill despite Evans calling it unconstitutional. He said McLain told bookkeeper at a 1948 Christmas party to place Evans on payroll at $73 a week. Evans, a legislator since 1939, allegedly used payments to entertain members. He will show four checks cashed locally while others were banked by Mrs. Evans in Los Angeles.
