Two armed burglary suspects, Anthony Carr and a 17 year old, were captured Sunday hiding in a ventilator area of the May Co store at Lakewood Center. They were linked to robberies at Butler Bros and Anthony’s Department Store with losses totaling about $3,500 to $4,000 and had loot recovered. Carr, 27, and the youth were booked on burglary suspicion, with a juvenile petition planned and arraignment expected in Los Cerritos Municipal Court.
Edith White of Long Beach and Nancy Wright of San Diego were nominated for women’s vice commander at large for the California Department American Legion at its state convention in San Francisco. White, a World War II veteran, is with Long Beach Women’s Post 578 and has served as past vice commander of the 39th District and active in hospital work.
L B Couple Triumph in Bridge Competition with 164 points. Mr and Mrs Marshall Ketchur of Long Beach win the mixed pairs at the American Contract Bridge League Western Division midsummer meet held at Wilton's Marine Room. Fred Morrison and Neida Uribe finish second with 160 points. Third place goes to Eric Stern and Ruth Fenger of Los Angeles with 15874 points amid 136 tables in play. Sixty harbor area men are scheduled to report for induction into the armed forces Tuesday morning, according to Patricia Fish, Selective Service coordinator. They may report at 7:50 a.m. at the Pacific Electric station or at 8:00 a.m. at the Los Angeles induction site. The men, part of the district call, were sworn in in Los Angeles and transported to Fort Ord.
Tony Gaudenti of Henry C. Soto Corp reports a tough alkali soil problem in West Lakewood parkways. Despite initial failures with bluegrass and fescue, crews dig four inches, replace adobe with sandy loam, and apply gypsum topdressings to establish grass along 14 miles of parkways. With 780 sprinkler heads, 6,000 pounds of seed, 1,077 trees, and substantial fertilizer, project progress is expected within a month, alongside home gardener tips to sow Bermuda grass and beat alkali.
City Manager Sam E. Vickers will ask the City Council to revive a $5,090,000 proposal to finance off street parking with funds from the Public Improvement Fund. The plan would require voter approval and charter amendment to establish parking districts in the downtown area.
