Diesel Power Shifts U.S. Railroads Toward Diesels
New York July 23 The American railroad trend favors diesel electric locomotives over steam. Despite steam still serving much of the network, diesels now handle about 47 percent of passenger miles and 32 percent of freight, with 6500 diesels in use versus 31,000 steam locomotives. The move reduces fuel needs and maintenance while increasing efficiency, though the Broadway Limited steam record still stands from 1905.
