Doctors link tonsil removal to polio severity findings
University of Minnesota researchers Dr. Gaylord W. Anderson and Jeanne L. Rondeau report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that polio victims who had tonsils removed are about four times more likely to develop bulbar polio. The study of over 3000 Minnesota outbreak victims suggests the absence of tonsils may remove a barrier to virus spread from throat to brain, accounting for more severe later cases.
