Customs Bill Goes to Conference
The customs reform bill moves to a conference to resolve differences between the Senate and House versions. The Senate backed a value based system, while the House favored export value. A group will reconcile provisions, with dual valuation retained if cuts exceed five percent and Treasury estimating revenue loss under the Senate plan under $300,000 annually.

New Jury to Probe Tax Fixing for Truman Aides
ST LOUIS The government will resume its probe into tax fixing with a new federal grand jury after a 15 week recess. Wyllys S Newcomb told jurors plans for continuing the inquiry as the current term ends Monday. The case follows convictions of Matthew J Connelly and T Lamar Caudle for conspiring to defraud the government by stalling tax prosecutions. Judge Rubey M Hulen died July 8 in an apparent accidental suicide, and Judge Gunnar H Nordbye assumed the Connelly Caudle case with others to review the judge’s papers for any bias.
