East Zone Launches Anti Church Drive

BERLIN July 19 4 East Germany following the lead of other Soviet satellites appears to be embarked on a menacing drive against the church. The controlled eastern press attacks what it calls unhygienic conditions in church run vacation camps and seeks police checks for violations before operation. West Germans see it as an opening wedge to close camps and restrict activity to the Free German Youth. The crackdown comes amid refusals to grant travel permits for Protestants to attend the Lutheran World Federation in Hannover in August and a demand from the SED that Protestant study groups be curbed for spreading enemy propaganda and weakening homeland defense readiness. Party Boss Walter Ulbricht urged action against student pastors in church related schools. The regime accuses churchmen of connections with American and British agents in the west.
