Millions of mosquitoes breed in carload lots in brackish Los Angeles River waters and Lakewood ditches, biting residents and prompting a protest to the Board of Supervisors. City officials plan talks with Army Engineers and Flood Control to assign blame, while Lakewood residents press for action as Long Beach reports draining pools and spraying DDT. Gambusia fish released in ponds aid control, with health workers offering free delivery.
Municipal Judge Meyer B. Marion in Los Angeles ruled that gambling obligations cannot be collected when payment is stopped. Mrs Bessie M Berman of Long Beach sued on two $100 checks given at a Gardena poker parlor. Norman H Gotlieb argued the debts were non collectable if the game is lawful. The court decided for Mrs Berman.
Bud Catlin a 39 year old Newport deep sea diver belongs to Sparling School of Diving Wilmington stayed 48 hours in a decompression chamber surpassing his earlier record by nine hours. He had planned 19 hours but recurring symptoms required gradual decompression and he returned home cured.
Jane Hicks or ZijA F. Sec ond St. told police last night that she had a fine vacation but wished an uninvited volunteer hadn't helped her unload the car. On returning home at 7 30 UTC her assistant, whom she didn’t see, departed with $58 worth of clothing taken from the car while she stayed in the house.
Air Secretary Thomas K. Finletter told Rep. Hillsing of California that the 452nd Bomb Wing based at Long Beach airport will be sent home when it completes 75 combat missions in Korea. He said most unit members already have completed that number of flights.
Col George M. Miller Jr., 39, of Hermosa Beach, will command the new 921st Reserve Training Wing at Long Beach Air Base, announced base commander Col Lee Q. Wasser. A retired WWII Air Force Reserve officer and Los Angeles City Schools Air Education Center director, Miller has Bronze Star and four ETO battle stars, and earned commission in 1954 after Idaho gradutaion. The wing joins 30 similar units nationwide and seeks veteran NCOs for administrative roles. inquiries go to the base recruiting office.
Police and FBI checked reports that Frank W. Kristy suspected in the kidnapping and death of Betty Jean Hansen had been seen in Las Vegas Salt Lake City Turlock and other western cities. A Las Vegas witness said a bearded man begged food. Miss Hansen’s car was found near Las Vegas. her body discovered in a California gully.
Mary Fine, 44, of Lakewood, suffered a chin injury in a collision between a car and a dump truck at Paramount and Firestone Boulevards in Downey yesterday. The car driver was Estell Grace Morgan, 22, of Lakewood, and the truck driver was Claude Edward Wright, 22, of Pico. Fine received treatment at Rancho Emergency Hospital.
Motorcycle Officer Carl Dy uyse escaped serious injury late yesterday afternoon after his bike collided with a car at Pasadena Ave and Pacific Coast Hwy. Police cited Donald Boster, 25, of 2585 Eighth St, for failure to grant the right of way. Motorcycle use spilled from the cycle and struck the pavement.
Wardlow Road from Long Beach Blvd to Pacific Ave is closed for 30 days. The city manager's office announced the closure to allow oil companies to rehabilitate pipelines prior to road resurfacing.
The Park Commission asks the city manager for four special officers to patrol parks at night after hours. President David W. Bryant cites rising damage to trees and plants, with 150 begonia plants stolen from Recreation Park. Juvenile division head Joseph M. Kenrick notes parents may be held liable for damages by their children.
Superior Judge Joseph M. Maltby denied a jury trial to determine if the game of Fascination may be licensed. The action against the tax collector, police chief and city prosecutor seeks to compel license issuance. July 31 is set for hearing on the writ.
The Long Beach Youth Band will perform tonight on the weekly community program at Bixby Park this summer. Additional acts include Long Beach Municipal Band on July 26 and several groups through August 30 leading to a Sept. 6 finale by the Long Beach Municipal Band.
Rudolph Walter Cordes, 47, of 4148 E. 15th St, was slightly hurt yesterday when his automobile and another driven by Ralph E. Westray, 21, of Fort MacArthur collided on Lakewood Blvd north of Spring St. Both cars were south bound. Cordes was not hospitalized.
City Manager Samuel F. E. Vick and administrative assistant John B. Wentz attended the summer meeting of the City Managers Division of the League of California Cities in Pasadena last night.
On thin threads of evidence the state prepared today to rest its charges against Henry Fora McCracken, 34, charged with the kidnap murder of 10 year old Patricia Hull. Crimeline details include fibers from clothing and bedspread, red wool sweater, yellow rayon, and animal hairs from his cabin and borrowed car. Criminologist Roger Greene linked fibers to Patty and to McCracken clothing, with autopsy evidence from Dr. Brandt. Defense plans for McCracken to testify, with life to be staked on his innocence.
The Bureau of Franchises will hold a public hearing August 6 at 9:30 a.m. in City Council chambers on a proposed taxicab rate increase. The decision followed findings that Yellow Cab Co and Diamond Cab Co operated at a loss throughout the past year.
In Long Beach and nationwide, wartime births favor boys. During Korea War's first year 3851 boys and 3631 girls were born locally, a 106 to 100 ratio, while the prior nonwar year stood at 108 to 100. Across 11 years, war years show up to 13 extra boys per 100 girls, with infant deaths to 100 girls at 140 boys. Researchers Dr. I D Litwack and Robert C Creighton compiled the figures.
Long Beach shoppers packed downtown stores for Dollar Value Days offered by 500+ retailers. Event runs through tomorrow with many shops open in the evening. Extra staff and bus service eased crowds as out-of-town visitors arrived from Anaheim Downey Compton and San Pedro. Stores handed out silver dollars as change prompting banks to supply 25 000 pieces.
Marie Birdsall, a former Long Beach waitress, faces a 1 to 10 year term in San Bernardino after a jury convicted her of manslaughter in the 46 year old Warren Eddenfield slaying. She beat him with a yogka bottle a flashlight and a rock before his death. Her lawyers plan to appeal.
Sheriff's deputies recovered more than $700 in building materials from Enrique Campa, 47, in his Carlsbad home. Campa confessed he received three loads of materials from two unnamed men for $200 and knew the items were stolen. He faces burglary charges and likely will be sent to Los Angeles County after a three month Oceanside jail term.
ILWU pickets kept two large Liberty Ships idle at the local harbor halting coastwise steamship service. The dispute centers on a demand for 2.97 dollars per hour more for handling bundled lumber, with Pacific Maritime Association resisting. Ships ranged from Berth 18 to Berth 54 and Wilmington goods wharf, carrying furshers, newsprint, and general cargo to Alaska.
A payroll totaling 1 385 000 weekly flows into Long Beach from Douglas Aircraft Co and North American Aviation in Downey. About 19 800 workers earn 72 020 000 yearly, with 75 to 80 percent living in the trade area. Douglas Long Beach employs 12 500 paid 875 000 weekly. North American 2 000 in Long Beach at 140 000 weekly. Downey hosts 5 800 workers paid 370 000 weekly, plus R and D and bomber production. Taxes total 28 005 000. 61 percent of remaining income cycles through retail.
The body of Fred Fisco, 34, of Reseda, who died in a boating accident at Marine Stadium, was found floating in the stadium waters by city employee Carl Eignor. Fisco died after falling from a motorboat as it turned sharply. Deputy County Coroner Phil Adkins attributed head wounds from the propeller. Boat operator Elmer Haah, of Portland, Ore., was involved. Peggy Fisco, his wife, dove in to aid but could not locate him. Lifeguards resumed a search after the mishap and the body was taken to Mattel's Mortuary.
