Senators OK Wider Social Aid
The Senate debated disability provisions and lowered retirement age for women, with Sen George defending the plan and Sen Byrd opposing aspects. The bill would extend Social Security to about 259,000 people, with monthly benefits around 75 dollars in year one, and reduce retirement age for some workers. An amendment by Sen Kerr restored disability coverage to the bill while House and Senate versions diverged on benefit timing for working women and widows. The measure also expands coverage to about 200,000 professionals including dentists and chiropractors. Leasing limits for phosphate lands were also discussed by the House Interior Committee, raising the leasing cap to 6,400 acres per entity in a state.
