AEG Chief Strauss Sees Atom Power as Servant Not Threat
AEC chairman Lewis L. Strauss told a Schenectady audience the first civilian use of atomic power promises hopeful service to mankind. He prepared remarks for the ceremony launching a public utility scale reactor built by General Electric at West Milton. The project aims to channel up to 10 million watts of commercial power in the next five years, with Niagara Mohawk contracting to buy the power. Strauss noted plans for a full-scale plant within two years to supply 60,000 kilowatts to the Pittsburgh area, as American firms mobilize to build several plants nationwide.
