Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus Ends Tent Show
The Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus ends its 1956 road tour with the Pittsburgh stop and folds its mammoth tent in Sarasota after 87 years of tented performances. A planned New York return is tentatively scheduled for April 8 at Madison Square Garden with future shows in air conditioned arenas. Rising costs, bad weather and television are cited as factors. Some workers fear layoffs while others hope to transfer to other acts or the Clyde Beatty Circus revival planned for August in Albuquerque.

U.N. Panel Deadlocks on Disarmament
United Nations disarmament talks stall as a five power subcommittee plans private sessions in New York or London. The 12 member disarmament commission has made no progress after years of debate, with Western bloc and Soviet positions clashing over a proposed prohibition on all arms and the framework for a regulatory program. The General Assembly debate is expected in November with little momentum noted.
