Eisenhower Plan to Finance Road Program Defeated
The House Public Works Committee defeated President Eisenhower's plan to fund an 12 year road expansion with 80-year bonds. Democratic support favored a tax hike on gasoline and trucks, while a bond plan faced solid Republican opposition. The vote sets up a clash over financing methods for a 40,000 mile interstate network and urban road upgrades.
