Steel Union to Decide Tomorrow on Delay Plea
Pittsburgh July 12 The United Steelworkers led by President Philip Murray said the union would decide tomorrow its answer to President Truman’s request for a 60 day delay in a steel strike. Murray spoke after the wage committee meeting and noted Truman asked continuation of contracts two months beyond July 16 while a Presidential board investigates issues. The strike call would take effect at midnight Thursday or Friday depending on contract dates. Truman warned a steel strike would have grave consequences for the national economy. He bypassed the Taft Hartley act by proclaiming the dispute threatens health and safety.
