Army Basks as Solons Debate Bases Dispersal
Washington reports Col W R Shuler and Secretary Robert T Stevens told the House appropriations subcommittee that dispersing Army bases is being studied as a precaution against atomic warfare. Critics warn dispersal costs are high, while advocates argue a spread reduces vulnerability even as total installations remain dispersed nationwide.

Plan for a 578000 strength long term Army force
Washington report states the Army plans a permanent peacetime strength of 578,000. Retiring Secretary Robert T. Stevens told a House subcommittee that this is the maximum now sought and would be financed through permanent construction. He said the Army is slated to drop to 1,027,000 men in mid 1956 under Eisenhower cutbacks, with permanent barracks funded to reach the 578,000 goal in the indefinite future. He offered no timing for reaching that level.
