Catholic Ban Bars Catholics From Ecumenical Meetings
In Chicago Archbishop Samuel Stritch forbids Roman Catholics in the archdiocese to attend or participate in meetings or assemblies led by outsiders seeking Christian unity. The World Council of Churches plan in Evanston drew comment from Dr Willian A Hooft of Geneva, who said the cardinal’s action was regrettable and noted Vatican instructions from 1949 may leave room for limited dialogue with ecclesiastical authorization. The council includes 161 Orthodox and Protestant denominations in 48 countries with about 170 million members.
