Mystery of Submarine Rescue Tale Stuns Atlantic Coast

Report of a 40 foot fishing boat Blue Star in distress near Barnegat New Jersey sparked a Coast Guard search over 3,700 square miles after survivors allegedly were picked up by a non American submarine. No wreckage or survivors were found and the tale later appeared to be an elaborate hoax.

Missing two year old fuels Phoenix kidnapping fears

In Phoenix a mother claims her son Steven, two, was abducted rather than wandered off. Police expanded the search with 49 jail prisoners helping neighbors along an irrigation canal near the Cipolla home. Officers checked over a thousand houses as the town prays for a safe return.

Desert death survivor leaves 30 pieces of silver to ex

In a Burbank probate filing, 49 year old Wilson left his childhood sweetheart Mrs Algene Hoskins half his $30,000 estate and named her executrix. He gifted the other half to his children Brenda 14 and Tamara. Wilson and his wife Elaine had separated in 1954. The will cites 40 years of love and faith and mentions the desert trip where Wilson died of exposure near Barstow. Hoskins contends the divorce award of community property to Mrs Wilson was invalid due to the judge’s unsigned decree before Wilson’s death.

Train derailed blocks rails and highway traffic

Sixteen B and O freight cars derailed on the eastern edge of Baltimore. Two cars broke through an overpass, halting the main line and prompting officials to divert traffic to Pennsylvania Railroad routes.

First of 43 planes begins 18000 mile airlift to Japan

A 43 plane airlift convoys 9,000 miles westward from Travis to Japan with 4,000 troops. The lead C124 Globemaster carries 92 paratroopers under Maj Lawrence Abbel, followed by others pilots Capt Ted Bishop and more. The operation, part of a two day mission, starts at Fort Campbell and moves toward Japan.

Steve Allen Praises Long Beach Water On TV

TV host Steve Allen admitted on his NBC show that Long Beach water has improved after previously calling it the worst in the world. Vince Zhamerman and Mary Ellen Parziale attended the segment as a champagne glass symbolized the city water and Allen drank the water on air.

Freeway Crash Claims Lakewood Man Hale at 29

Charles Hale 29 of 5302 Briercrest Ave Lakewood City died after a speeding auto toppled light standards and a barricade at the Long Beach Freeway Compton end. He suffered punctured lungs and broken ribs and died at Los Angeles County General Hospital after being extricated unconscious by a passerby. Four witnesses said he drove over 80 mph and failed the Atlantic Ave exit. The car rolled over multiple times and pinned him inside in a debris field.

House Labor Group OKs $1 Minimum Pay

The House Labor Committee voted 21 to 9 to raise the federal minimum wage from 75 cents to $1 an hour effective March 1. A Republican bid for 90 cents failed on a 15 to 15 tie. President Eisenhower backs 90 cents, while Democrats push a $1 level as a compromise between 0 and $1.25. The Senate already approved $1 with additional provisions. About 25 million workers would be covered nationwide.

Hail Breaks Windows Puts Cars In Billings

A fierce hailstorm swept Billings Montana with 54 mph winds breaking 1,000 to 2,000 school windows and wrecking 160 airplanes at the airport. Cars roofs and crops suffered, several people injured as the storm damaged the county hospital region.
