Car Smashes Into Truck Near Torrance
A Sunday School outing for five youths ended in tragedy when their car crashed into a gravel truck on Figueroa Street near East Rancho. Driver Kent Christiansen, 19, was killed. his sister Mar Jon Christiansen, 22, and Ethel Patterson, 15, were seriously injured. Nancy Patterson, 18, and Patricia Glavenic, 20, were critically or seriously hurt. The truck fled, investigators say. the crash injured two others and prompted a statewide search for the vehicle and driver. The mother of the dead youth, a nurse’s aid, collapsed upon learning the news. Arnald Christiansen, father of the deceased, said they had attended a Sunday School party and a Philharmonic concert.
