Soot MERRY-GO-ROUND critique of college hoops fans
The piece rails against basketball stalling and poor play by California and USF, noting a Berkeley crowd of 7200 and $15 tickets, while lampooning Coach Pete Newell and Washington's John Cherberg. It mocks slow rounds, questions rules, and laments fan disaffection with the sport on the Pacific Coast.

Alston Sees Big Year Ahead for Brooks and Himself
Dodgers manager Walter Alston foresees a strong season for the team and hints at another salary raise for himself after a winter of signings and optimists. He cites improved player form from Campanella and Newcombe, Podres conversion to pitcher, and healing arms of Erskine Spooner and Love as signs of a brighter year. Alston notes potential competition for infield spots and expects rookie help, while his own pay rise from 17,500 to 22,500 reflects renewed confidence after last year’s World Series success.
