Naval Ships and Aircraft Hit Won San Again

U S forces from three carriers and the battleship Missouri bombarded Won san on the northeast Korean coast in what the Navy called a vicious all out aerial bombardment. Vice Admiral James Clark oversaw the attack from Missouri as destroyers joined in, weather was clear though decks iced, and allied planes hit North Korean troops in the area while Eighth Army reported scattered patrol skirmishes amid subzero cold on the front.

Whale Walter Returns to Port After Mischief in Harbor

A California gray whale named Walter, who caused a stir in the Los Angeles Harbor this week, reappeared today between the pilot station and the outer harbor breakwater lighthouse. Coast Guard units were dispatched to guide Walter toward Baja California, where gray whales are gathering.

Walter Stirred Up Trouble at Pierpoint Landing

John A. Fredricks 48 of Temple Ave told police he was struck on the head with a chair at Pierpoint Landing after a dispute over a whale. Robert H. Williams 40 of Fasy Ave was jailed on assault with a deadly weapon charges, after Fredricks sought treatment at Seaside Hospital for a five inch laceration needing 20 stitches and possible skull fracture.

Boy Fears Whipping Then Fatally Shoots Himself

Amelia Ohio report details 14 year old Frederick Robert Jones who, amid a quarrel with a neighbor girl on a school bus, told kin he would shoot himself. He rushed to a bedroom and killed himself with a shotgun blast, sheriff says. The girl's father reportedly planned to notify Ralph Jones.

Army collects 45 cents from ex GI over lost necktie

Floyd L Oldham of Greensboro North Carolina was ordered to pay 45 cents after an eight thousand mile six month search for a GI necktie he lost in Japan last summer. The army sent a major to collect a quarter and two dimes from the veteran who refused a surplus necktie and paid the cent owed, noting the matter would be forwarded to finance officers in Sasebo Japan to balance the unit's books.

In Memphis the FBI said Ramage Jr. led a Jackson Mississippi outfit hiring crippled teen solicitors to sell magazines door to door across multiple states. Princess Victoria sinks in hurricane off Irish coast

The 445 foot freighter Fairhope is reported aground at San Benito Island off Mexico. Coast Guard radio messages say Number 2 port deep tank and the shaft alley are flooded. No casualties reported. The ship left Long Beach Los Angeles Harbor Thursday bound for the east coast carrying general cargo. The Fairhope, 6125 gross tons, is operated by Waterman Steamship. Pugs and the Coast Guard cutter Morris were dispatched to the scene.

Army sergeant hurries home as ship turns back

Sgt. Finnis E. Pummill of Newport Arkansas learns his two month old daughter Barbara Jean is dead and his wife Ora is ill. The Eltinge reverses course 40 miles at sea to bring him ashore at Am Crose Lightship. Red Cross funds enable his flight from La Guardia to Nashville then Memphis with a final 180 mile trip home by road.

Thieves Target U S Air Base Safe at Lakenheath

A group of professional safecrackers attacked the American atom bomber base at Lakenheath early today. They forced a safe open and escaped with between 2000 and 3000 pounds in cash and government scrip.
