FBI Arrests Jewel theft Suspect Here
A 31-year-old man and his wife were jailed by the FBI in Los Angeles on charges of interstate transportation of diamonds and other gems allegedly stolen in Detroit. Efraim Lishansky alias Theodore Gilbert alias John Whitney and Mrs Doris Lishansky denied prior ties to Detroit. FBI fingerprint checks indicated dual identities. The couple allegedly bought 93,557 dollars worth of jewelry from New York brokers in Detroit with a bogus check totaling 150,000 dollars in gems valued at 150,000 dollars, some belonging to him others on consignment. The man, operating as a jewelry merchant, had gems in a Los Angeles office when arrested. the wife was taken at a Long Beach home. Authorities traced them from Detroit to Dallas to Houston to Long Beach. Warrant actions spanned Detroit and Dallas. Detroit police say Gilbert obtained the gem fortune last fall while acting as principal of Boys Republic School near Farmington, Michigan, and claimed to buy diamonds for a friend. The brokers showed gems to Gilbert in a bank vault. he objected to the light, paid with a certified check, which bounced, leading to the arrest. Gilbert had been fired as principal earlier for fraudulent pretenses tied to a master’s degree from New York.
