Major Southern California storm hits coast with heavy rains
A north wind driven rainstorm swept the coast with forecasts of up to two inches by Thursday night. The U S Weather Bureau called it the first major rain since November 22, 53 inches reported in Long Beach by noon, with Santa Barbara and other locales recording varying totals. Winds to 30 mph offshore and higher gusts up to 43 mph inland accompanied the system, which also brought snow to mountains around 5500 feet. Traffic accidents occurred on slick streets as the storm disrupted area life and threatened harbor tides, with officials warning of higher water as winds persisted through late day.
