Seiner Rams Rocks as 12 Aboard Saved at Breakwater

The 82-foot purse seiner Esperia II rammed the east breakwater near Long Beach harbor at 5:28 AM. All 12 crew members scrambled to the rocks before the ship sank carrying several tons of sardines. Captain Anthony Luce led the crew amid rough seas and blinding rain as Coast Guard cutter Morris and towboat Pacific Rocket aided in the rescue.

Van Fleet Hitches Ride After Plane Downburst in Korea

United States General James A. Van Fleet and three officers were forced to land on an abandoned front-line airstrip during a blizzard in Korea. They slogged through snow to a road where a jeep halted. The four-star commander, cap visor lifted, identified himself and was guided to headquarters to the relief of anxious staff officers. The second aircraft avoided the storm and landed safely.

U S Vessel Rescues 17 From Sinking Argentine Ship

The U S vessel Mormaeson rescued 17 crewmen from the 700 ton Argentine merchantman Calamar seventy miles north of Mar del Plata after she reported engine flooding from a sprung plate and began sinking. The 773 ton New York ship owned by Moore McCormack Line Inc aided the Calamar near San Clement del Tuy.

Cost of Living Index Reaches New All-Time High

Polly Moran Actress Dies After Long Illness

Polly Moran, 68, famed silent film comedienne noted for her work with Marie Dressler, died of a heart ailment at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital after a yearlong illness. Her husband Martin Malone, a former boxing champion, is reportedly ill, and Moran had an adopted son, John Moran. Moran had campaigned for Laguna Beach City Council in 1946 on a pro dog platform.

Rescue Paramedics Stranded in Idaho Snowbound

Two Air Force paramedics S/Sgt Frank A Sackrider and Lt Daniel A Fitzerald are stranded in the Sawtooth Mountains after aiding Mrs Betty Jack and her two year old son.
