A pair of bandits robbed a liquor store operator at 1112 E Broadway last night and fled as police returned fire. Owner Pete Wybyrany, 56, was treated at St Marys Hospital for a head injury. The robbers fled west on Broadway after confrontations with Officers O Rourke and Cohee. two suspects were later detained as police connected the crime to two prior holdups last week.

Bus Car Head-On Crash Kills Two Near Carlsbad
A sedan and a Greyhound bus collided head on on Highway 101 in Carlsbad killing two auto occupants and injuring seven others, six bus passengers. Deceased are Joseph Alton Frejia, 31, Los Angeles, a longshoreman, and Willie J. Louis, 26, Marine at Camp Del Mar. Richard Harry Harold, also of Los Angeles, was seriously injured. Four bus passengers had minor injuries and were treated at Oceanside hospital. Highway Patrolman F. W. Jessau reported the crash as northbound sedan vs southbound bus.
