French Underground Chief Denounces Le Havre Bombing
Le Havre wartime underground chief Jean Filoque said the 1944 Allied bombing that killed about 28 000 people was totally unnecessary. He told aboard the Villanger in Long Beach that he warned the Allied artillery commander before the raid, noting most Germans were gone and urging no bombing. Four square miles of Le Havre were destroyed in the attack, the man said, as another guest list included port authorities and industrialists aboard the Norse vessel during a luncheon hosted by Interocean Line.
