Los Angeles health officer Dr George M Uhl warns flood waters from collapsed private sewer systems in the San Fernando Valley pose health risks. He urges washing vegetables and boiling water when service is interrupted though mains remain sanitary and tap water is generally safe.
In Liverpool a circus bear named Teddy mocked a rival by sticking out his tongue. The other bear lunged and severed four inches of the protruding tongue, which was then eaten. Trainer Bailey Fossett commented on the bizarre incident.
A severe rain and snow storm isolating Southern California resorts cut power to Lake Arrowhead for three days and left Santa Anita Hospital without heat. Snow depth reached 46 inches at Arrowhead and 68 inches at Big Bear, with road access blocked to multiple towns and several mountain communities reporting widespread disruption.
A War surplus cubber raft carried a lone boy away after being swept down the Los Angeles River in Compton. Seven of eight boys who launched the raft swam ashore near Imperial Highway. the unidentified youth remained aboard the craft as searchers found the raft at San Luis Street. Authorities continued a search for the missing boy.
The government raised wholesale price ceilings on General Motors automobiles under the Capehart amendment. Increases span from about $60 on Chevrolets to $103 on Cadillacs, with OPS reviewing GM’s filing of proposed new ceilings and price lists. Other automakers like Chrysler and Kaiser have filed applications. Packard and Crosley have not.
Weather shows tonight and tomorrow with decreasing intensity and more scattered showers. Small craft warnings remain from Pt Conception to San Diego with winds up to 30 miles an hour.
French-led police arrested about 20 top Tunisian Nationalist and Communist leaders in Aredawn raids and sent them to secret rural detention camps. A general strike was ordered in Tunis by the General Union of Tunisian Workers to protest recent bloodshed as authorities banned the Neo Destour congress and blocked roads to Tunis. Habib Bourguiba was among those arrested.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill toured the U S Air Force command post in the Pentagon, described as the nerve center for world air operations with 24 hour staffing and its own communications system. His tour followed his Congress speech supporting firm action against any breach of the Korean truce and implied U S threats to China if aggression resumes. The visit promises a clearer view of American air power.
A second severe storm dumps heavy rain and floods across Los Angeles and Orange counties. The Coast Guard evacuates hundreds in Artesia Hawaiian Gardens Reseda and Norwalk areas while shelters open in schools and churches. Dozens of roads close and 14 deaths are reported as offshore storms move down from Alaska. Police report a naked body found in Tyrone Street Van Nuys amid the flooding chaos.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover announced the arrest of seven people and the seizure of hundreds of gambling machines in Kentucky. Machines valued at 351800 were seized in 12 key cities and immoral areas as part of a continuing federal drive against interstate gambling. Dealers in gambling machines were arrested under both Kentucky and federal law. Agents and local officers carried out rapid seizures in private and public clubs cafes and various places of amusement.

Laguna Santa Cruz area residents report heavy rain undermined a three story seaside home built on an embankment over the ocean plunging it 40 feet down a cliff into the surf. The Fleming residence of River Sine slid 20 feet before tipping over the edge. The house and furnishings were destroyed in the collapse and subsequent waves.
President Truman told Sieminski that he never quits under fire or walks away from challenges. Sieminski quoted the president praising readers’ needs and the country’s good while Republicans favored instruments and Democrats stressed people’s needs. Asked if Truman would seek the presidency again, Sieminski said if there is a fight he’ll join and never quit.
