Meat Hoarders May Hold Billion Pounds of Meat
Government officials estimate up to 1,000,000,000 pounds of meat may be stored in home freezers and lockers in anticipation of rationing. The figure equates to about two weeks of national supply and reflects rising numbers of freezer units, refrigerators, and lockers. Officials warn rationing would curb uneven distribution and require disclosure of on hand meat for ration cards.
