President Rejects G. O. P. Plea on Coal Action
President Truman rejected a Republican appeal to invoke Taft-Hartley emergency powers to end wildcat soft coal strikes. A separate plan by the NLRB sought a temporary injunction against John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers for unfair labor practices, potentially accelerating a court order. Meanwhile miners pressed an all-out strike, with over 73,600 idle and production falling sharply as the dispute over the coal contract deepened.
