Eisenhower sends budget to Congress with higher spending
President Eisenhower sent a 1957 budget plan to Congress forecasting total outlays of about 64.27 billion dollars this year and 66.3 billion next year, a rise that supports new programs including education spending, highway building, and defense. He warned any tax cuts depend on prudent spending and debt restraint while seeking a 435 million dollar surplus in the coming year.
