President Truman said he will issue an executive order placing offshore tidelands under Navy control for national defense. He warned oil companies would face a 100 billion barrel “steal” if they claimed the reserves. The issue centers on whether states or the federal government own tidelands.
Six former high ranking Nazis including Werner Naumann were arrested by British authorities on charges of plotting to overthrow the West German government. Authorities say the group sought control from within and without West Germany with possible links to East German Communists and fascist networks in Spain and Argentina. Naumann, 43, once state secretary in Goebbels ministry, is the lead suspect believed to have fled Berlin after Hitler's suicide.
A broad Midwest blizzard and cold wave disrupted travel and closed hundreds of schools. Sleet and freezing rain preceded high winds and heavy snow across Kansas, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Iowa. Temperatures plunged well below zero with several towns reporting dramatic drops as planners warned of continuing severe conditions.

Vienna strain: U S Embassy says many Americans including government staff are detained for questioning after grand jury indicted Otto Werber and Kurt L Ponger of New York City on espionage charges. Walter Lauber, a student, linked to the Viennese news office, is also questioned amid an ongoing yearslong probe. A plane bearing Werber and Ponger was due in Vienna late today.
Lt Cmdr. H. E. Clark 33 of Long Beach died when his Douglas Skyraider crashed on a ridge 10 miles east of Hemet in Riverside County during a training flight from San Diego. Known as Howie Clark, he starred at the Naval Academy and later coached there in 1948. He won the Silver Star in World War II and is survived by his widow, two daughters, a son, and his parents in Long Beach and Coronado.
Arthur Lange of the Santa Monica symphony hit a crescendo in a Romeow and bullet overture rehearsal when his trousers dropped to the floor. He recovered quickly, pulling them up and continuing the performance while the brass and drums roared. Women in the violin section observed his knobby knees as the brief interlude ended.
A Pennsylvania Railroad electric locomotive from Boston crashed through a stopblock and into the basement of Washington Union Station at 3:30 a.m. injuring 41, with no deaths. Investigations by ICC and FBI began as officials pledged a full inquiry into the crash and its impact on upcoming inaugural events.
The report notes President elect Eisenhower will deliver the State of the Union to Congress in person, with headquarters saying the date is not set but will be soon after taking office next Tuesday. He will depart New York Sunday by special train for Washington and stay at the Statler Hotel in the capital.
Greenfield Ohio notes a postcard mailed from Austin to Mrs. Charles Matthews, who has been dead for years. Postmistress Minnie Hester found the card postmarked Austin, 100 miles away, with the date May 7, 1909, suggesting unexpected mailing within a century.
An explosion at a northeast Washington battery and appliance shop threw firemen into the street and sent debris up to 40 feet away. Initial reports spoke of fatalities and 24 injuries including Fire Chief Millard Sutton, but officials later said deaths were unconfirmed as ambulances from Virginia and Maryland assisted. Five firefighters were thrown across the street. six, including Sutton, were trapped by rubble in the basement.

High winds buffeted the storm battered Pacific as tides rose to 6.9 feet at Redondo Beach and 24 feet along San Diego County, flooding streets and forcing evacuations from Surfside Colony. A tourist cottage was swept from Ocean Beach while Crystal Pier sagged and officials warned the structure could be lost. Dozens of homes faced encroaching water, gas service was shut off to 150 homes, and sand bag barriers were set up to protect properties.
Long Beach Mounted Police patrol with palomino mounts boarded a special Union Pacific train for Washington D C to join California’s delegation at the presidential inaugural ceremonies. The unit, founded in 1935 and boasting over 200 trophies, will march behind Gov Karl Warren’s motorcade in the first division. The train carried 48 patrol members and 80 others in seven cars, plus three horse cars with ornate Sterling silver trappings. Hundreds gathered to watch the loading at 2300 Carson St.
Twelve youths were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a Loyola High School campus riot in Los Angeles. Four Loyola students were hospitalized as trouble started when groups clashed during an outdoor basketball game and the vice principal ordered the intruders off the grounds. About 40 youths returned armed with rocks clubs baseball bats and pipes.
A Chicago south side food and liquor store holdup ended with the gunman apologizing and promising repayment. He took $65 from owner Stanley Kackowski, 45, saying his wife is sick and he will repay every cent someday.
