Air Force Safety Chief Clears Death Jet Pilot
Air Force flight safety chief Brig. Gen. Richard J. O Keefe says Maj. Robert A Blair the Sabre jet pilot who crashed into a Signal Hill neighborhood killing eight people was authorized by the Municipal Airport control tower to make a left hand approach. The investigation board will report daily and a final finding will be released through Air Force headquarters. Secretary Talbott pledged damages to victims families while noting the loss cannot be compensated. Continued on Page A-3 Col. 1.

River Collision Sinks Ship Near Williamsburg Bridge
A cargo vessel and a tanker collided in the East River near the Williamsburg Bridge early today injuring six crewmen aboard the Verdon, a 205 foot tanker. The Beth Coaster, carrying no cargo, continued and was later found at anchor off Staten Island. Coast Guard and police searched five hours. the Verdon settled in about 25 feet of water near the sea wall, injuries treated and released.
