Pictorial flight instruments prove superior in navigation tests
The CAA found that pictorial cockpit displays let pilots navigate more accurately. In tests, 15 private and 15 instrument-rated pilots solved 407 problems with pictorial instruments, while 435 problems with symbolic displays yielded 50 failures. Pictorial displays require less interpretation and produced consistent correct corrections, unlike symbolic gauges. The CAA has contracts for developing pictorial computers for aircraft position display.
