Shippers sue estates of three dead officers in $12 million suit
The Moore McCormack Lines filed a federal action in Brooklyn seeking 12 million dollars from the estates of three officers who died when the freighter Marmadete sank in the Atlantic on October 1, 1954. Capt. Patrick McMahon, Chief Engineer Edward T. Wall, and Chief Officer Harold R. Richardson are named. Eleven of 43 crew survived as the ship carried iron ore and cocoa beans from Vitória, Brazil. The company accuses the officers of negligent loading, reduced speed during the storm, failure to prepare lifeboats, and not sending an SOS. A second $12 million suit remains pending in Manhattan federal court.
