Solons Hear Request to Extend Draft

Washington AP reports President Eisenhower asked Congress to extend the draft law four years, raise pay for long serving personnel, and create a stronger reserve to deter atomic attack. He outlined a 6.7 percent payroll increase and total annual costs near 870 million dollars for pay, benefits, housing, travel, and survivor plans, with selective service extended beyond June 1950.

Extend Area for H Bomb Evacuation

Civil Defense officials expanded the evacuation zone in a plan called run for the hills. The new area covers much of Grange County from Santa Monies to Newport Beach inland to San Fernando and Azusa, including 4,500,000 people. The meeting in Pasadena discussed delaying a decision until after July 1 while awaiting a survey report on the plan’s feasibility.

Air Force tests zero length launch for jet fighters

Baltimore reports the Air Force demonstrates portable 39 foot platforms to launch F84 Thunderjets from Edwards Air Force Base California. Tests by Air Research and Development Command and Glenn L. Martin used booster bottles to propel jets off mobile launchers with no permanent installations. Pilots say takeoff strain is lighter than catapult launches as platforms are easily moved between sites.

Forecast Mostly Clear Skies Through Friday in Long Beach

The Weather Bureau forecasts mostly clear skies for Long Beach through Friday with warmer afternoon highs. An observer notes increasing high clouds tonight and Friday but no rain is expected. Downtown Long Beach records a 41 degree low today, up three from Wednesday, with a 67 degree high on Wednesday.

Costa Rica Captures Rebel Chief in Rio Pete Fight

A five nation commission arrived in Costa Rica to conduct an on the spot probe of warfare as army authorities announced the capture of Carlos Lara Hine, a rebel leader. He was said killed? no injured in a fierce fight at Rio Pete near Villa Quesada. Authorities reported large caches of ammunition including seven Browning machine guns and many Mauser rifles seized from retreating rebels, with many other rebels captured and two seriously wounded. The incident followed air attacks and a tense welcome for U S forces arriving from Panama for the Organization of American States survey.

U N Leader Hammarskjold Arrives Silent on Mission

U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold arrived from a mission to free 11 American airmen in Red China and remained in bed at Stead AFB during a refueling stop. He offered no comment on talks with Chou En Lai about the prisoners.
