State Gas Taxes Deductible for 1951 Federal Returns
The Automobile Club of Southern California reminded motorists that sums paid for state gasoline taxes may be deducted on 1951 federal income tax returns. The deduction covers the California tax of 4.13 cents per gallon paid since January 1 1951. Federal gasoline taxes are not deductible. If precise purchase records are unavailable, a deduction may be justified by miles traveled divided by the car’s average miles per gallon, but the taxpayer bears the burden of proof.
