Washington’s Miss Grace Patton and Miss Eleanor Deak both secured reinstatement and back pay after being dismissed as security risks from the Army in 1948. Patton, patton remarks it’s been a long fight but they made it. Both were employed at the Army finance center in St Louis.
In the North Pacific near Vancouver Island, seven planes from the United States Canada and Japan joined the sea effort to find the abandoned freighter Pennsylvania and its 46 crew. After daylong searches across hundreds of miles in stormy seas, no trace was found as wind snow and high swells hindered efforts.
An 18 day old baby boy abducted at gunpoint from Mankato home was found unharmed 17 hours later in Mrs Scheid's apartment above a tavern in downtown New Ulm. Police said Mrs Callahan was approached by a woman claiming to be an expectant mother, a burglary, and a shooting occurred before authorities recovered the infant and returned him to his mother.
New York January 11. A congressional committee heard from dermatologist Dr. Marion B. Sulzberger that a man may suffer facial irritation from kissing a woman if he is allergic to ingredients in her lipstick. The finding came while investigators examined chemical use in cosmetics.
Halsey McGovern, father of two U S soldiers killed in Korea, refused to accept the Medal of Honor and Silver Star awarded to his sons, saying President Truman is not worthy to confer such honors. The incident marks a historic refusal of the nation’s highest military awards. White House offered no comment.
Washington reports the Defense Production Administration ordered a major limit on metals for civilian construction starting April 4. Housing may start at 600,000 units per year, about 45 percent below last year's 1.1 million starts and below the current 850,000 pace.
Paris Jan 11 The United Nations General Assembly voted 42 to 5 to establish a 12 nation disarmament commission. The panel will study phased arms reductions and aim to prohibit atomic weapons in the long run, backed by the United States Britain and France. Russia opposed certain steps and Czechoslovakia sought harsher limits, while Argentina and several Arab and Asian states abstained. The commission includes Security Council members plus Canada and must report by June 1952.
Washington reporters state military chiefs from the United States Britain and France began a top secret session with observers from Canada Australia and New Zealand to discuss possible actions if Red China attacks French Indochina. French General de Lattre de Tassigny warned of a major intervention by Red China and died in Paris during the day.
The Army estimated total enemy casualties in Korea at 1,569,069 through January 3, an increase of 22,201 since December 7. The figure includes 1,121,248 battle deaths, 277,822 non battle losses, 132,065 prisoners of war, and 37,934 civilian internees. United Nations casualties were 109,459, not including 212,544 reported by South Korean forces up to last June.

In Washington on January 11, the Senate House atomic committee viewed a concealed wooden box containing a model gun designed to fire atomic shells. Chairman McMahon refused to confirm if the model resembled a finished weapon, noting only that ordnance officers brought it for the session. The panel also reviewed the AEC plan for the hydrogen bomb, while McMahon stressed the committee’s watchdog role and declined further comment.
Washington January 11 The government launched nationwide court actions to halt alleged over ceiling price payments by packinghouses for live cattle. OPS said eight court orders sought in Wichita Kansas Sioux City Iowa Omaha Nebraska and Denver to stop violations with Cudahy Packing Co accused of paying about 40000 over ceiling prices. Also ongoing investigations in California.
Associated Telephone Co. petitions the State Public Utilities Commission for a 1,926,000 annual rate rise. Proposed changes would raise coin box rates from 5 to 10 cents. The utility serves Long Beach and areas across the south and east county regions plus San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Orange, Tulare and Fresno counties.

At dawn the 23 bodies from the Aer Lingus crash on Moel Sinbed Peak in Snowdonia are to be recovered. The two Americans among the dead remain unconfirmed, and the two-engine plane from London to Dublin reportedly dived in during a hail storm. Debris and bodies spread across a wide area, with the fuselage burnt out.
Near Panmunjom a wave of air battles south of 38th parallel leaves four MIG-15s downed and a fifth damaged in exchanges with American jets. Col Gabreski adds another kill, marking his fourth MIG and 32nd plane, as ground fronts stay quiet and naval fire pounds Communist positions near Kosong.
In MUNSAN Korea Allied truce negotiators issued an ultimatum to the Reds demanding an explanation for a contradiction in their stated stance on airfield construction during an armistice. Maj Gen Turner said talks could not proceed without clarification. Chinese Maj Gen Hsieh Fang rejected the demands as unsatisfiable. The subcommittees met briefly and will reconvene in Panmunjom.
In San Francisco on January 11 a taxi driver, Joseph Falkowich, recounted a holdup by a man dressed as an Army captain who stole $25 and warned of a sleep-inducing shot. A .38 bullet punctured a lighter in Falkowich’s pocket at 18 inches, firing and stunning him, as police verify.
Paris report says Gen Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, the French commander in chief and high commissioner in Indochina, died after two operations for a tumor and a two day coma. He was 61.
Neal Robinson, 55, a farmer near Tahlequah Oklahoma, is charged with holding Cecil Dutton, 22, and Walter Moore, 18, in peonage to cut wood for his whisky still. The two Rogers men say they were forced at gunpoint and escaped, later reporting theft and threats to police. Benton County Sheriff John Black and State Trooper Wallace Parnell investigated.
