Pair Held 5 10 Years in Slave Camps

Berlin report says two Americans Pvt William Marchuk and John H Noble were released by the Russians after years in Soviet slave camps. Marchuk, deserter since 1949, and Noble, from Detroit, arrived in West Berlin in U S Army custody and will undergo medical exams and debriefing. Noble expressed willingness to cooperate. In Santa Ana a 35 year old brunette Mildred Marie Hain died after arguing with her escort and leaping from his car near Placential Street Newport Avenue. Rifle Bullet Kills Man Watching TV Near Fields Landing

Samuel Webber, 36, was fatally shot while watching TV in his home at Fields Landing, six miles south of here. Four shots were fired. one struck the house, another bullet hit Webber in the abdomen. His wife Mabel and two children were present as he died two hours later. Sheriff Albert Nichols led the investigation.

Four Burned in California Home Tragedy

A mother Grace Gamrath about 30 and her two young daughters Gay and Gwendolyn died when flames trapped them in a bedroom. John Bartram 60 fractured an ankle while trying to kick out the front door and Lydia Bartram 62 suffered back burns escaping. Miss Priscilla Bartram 22 cut her hands breaking glass to reach a window. Firefighters said a faulty floor furnace likely sparked the blaze as flames blocked the escape.

Marines Launch Amphibious Rainbow Assault on Beach

In a staged Oceanfront exercise named Operation Rainbow, 400 Marines from the Fleet Marine Force of Camp Pendleton landed in five waves at Long Beach's east beach. Worker Nearly Killed in Vat of Hot Water

Alvin Heavrin, 54, a lumber company worker from Luvsevibuk Kentucky, fell into a vat heated nearly to boiling. Heavrin was hospitalized in critical condition with burns covering about 80 percent of his body after slipping into the concrete log-soaking pit. he climbed out unaided and was found by other workers. Doctors classify burns as second and third degree.
