Mendez Reveals Panama Talks Aimed at US Air Bases
Long Beach resident and Panamanian expert Ming Mendez explains how Panama’s 1948 election and anti US sentiment shaped a staged dispute over air base sites. He argues US diplomacy failed as Panamanian leaders used negotiations to gain leverage and bolster nationalist credentials. He calls for a corps of career diplomats and closer US cooperation with trusted Latin American partners.
