Alamitos Marina Gets Subcommittee Backing for Harbor Plan

A subcommittee of the Citizens Committee on Public Improvements tentatively approves a $10.124 million Alamitos Bay small boat harbor project. A public hearing is set for 2 p.m. next Wednesday in the City Council Chamber to discuss further steps and possible local funding. The plan includes land acquisitions totaling about 3.457 million dollars for park development with parcels along the San Gabriel River, Dominguez area, and Scherer Park expansion. Proponents say self liquidating features will cover costs and yield a surplus within years, with revenue from 1900 docked boats, city and school tax increments, and says the project will attract tourists and conventions while aiding flood control. Federal support of up to $2.8 million is proposed, subject to future authorization, though local consideration is urged regardless of federal involvement.
