Three Bookies Arrested by Long Beach Police Raiders
Long Beach police arrested three licensed bookies in a crackdown on bookmaking. Patrick E. Irvine, 49, of 3916 East Second Street. Pete E. Curti, 44, of 22001 Hawaiian Gardens. and Morris Lippe, 49, of 429 West Tenth Street, Apr. 2, were booked for investigation of bookmaking and conspiracy to commit bookmaking and released on writs of habeas corpus. Bail set at 2500 for Irvine and 1500 for Curti and Lippe. All registered bookmakers with the Internal Revenue Bureau under the federal tax law. Det. Insp. E. H. Kennedy and Set. Lewis Jacobsen led the operation, which included a microphone in Irvine’s apartment and a listening post. A roadblock on Ximena Avenue near Fourth Street trapped Curti.
