F-86 Flashes Across U.S. in 4 Hrs 8 Min

World War II ace Col Willard W Millikan set a cross nation speed record by flying a F-86 Saber jet from Los Angeles to New York in just over four hours aided by favorable tailwinds. He broke the 1946 mark of four hours 14 minutes set by Col William Council. Millikan, 33, a Virginia native now serving as a Washington representative for a rubber company, departed Los Angeles Intl and landed at Floyd Bennett Field Brooklyn after a midflight refueling.

Another British GI Tried for Cowardice in Korea

Long Waited Rains Move Into Northern California

Long delayed rains moved into Northern California as a storm off British Columbia brought moisture southward. Rain was forecast for the northern counties this afternoon, with lighter to moderate rainfall spreading to the San Joaquin and Salinas valleys by Sunday afternoon and ending by Sunday night. Nab 2 More Suspects in Texas Bank Holdup

FBI agents tracked and captured a young Houston couple in New Orleans linked to a $57,000 National Bank of Houston robbery. David Mitchell and Lola, 18, face arraignment on federal robbery charges. Basil Brooks 28 of Gardena and Roy Fischer 56 of Hawthorne died after separate incidents in Compton and Lemolo Road area respectively. Bertha Morris 83 of Long Beach died of injuries from a New Year’s Eve car crash. Four others were injured in New Year’s Day accidents in Long Beach.

U. S. Holiday Traffic Kills Four an Hour

A United Press survey shows traffic accidents killed 145 people since New Year’s Day began at 6 p m Thursday and predicts 1287 deaths on highways before the holiday period ends Sunday. Fires caused 25 deaths, airplane crashes four, and other incidents 23 for a total of 207. Safety Council forecasts trend toward about 1237 holiday fatalities overall.

Western Big Four Berlin talks date set by Kremlin

The United States Britain and France agreed to hold the Big Four conference in Berlin on January 25 after Moscow proposed a three week postponement. Diplomatic sources say a Molotov meeting could occur if the Russians keep the date. France’s new crisis could delay but will likely be represented. The West aims to push German and Austrian issues high on the agenda to show Russian good faith. Probe Unit Heads to Interview Gouzenko in Canada

Ships Crash Off Coast Reach Port After Night Rescue

Two ships rammed 150 miles north of San Francisco near Fort Bragg and reached port after a night of battling the sea. Half Block Destroyed in Elko Fire

Flames gutted a half block of businesses in Elko Nevada causing about 200000 dollars in damage before fire crews controlled the blaze. No injuries were reported. The fire, of undetermined origin, hit a furniture store meat market auto shop plate glass firm and neon sign company.
