New Appeal Chance Given to Chessman
Condemned convict Daryl Chessman gains a new federal appeal. Chief Judge William Denman granted a certificate of probable cause to review Judge Goodman’s denial of habeas corpus. Denman notes possible delay from the 1949 Los Angeles transcript hearing and suggests earlier action might have reduced the lengthy appeals. Arguments could be heard within four months. Chessman, convicted in 1948 for kidnapping, sex crimes, and robbery, has spent eight years in San Quentin pursuing state and federal appeals including six appearances before the Supreme Court.
