Two men robbed butcher Charles Hallstan returning from the bank with cash for Saw-Mart at 2625 E Carson St Dominquez. One man produced a .43 caliber pistol, ordering all money. Hallstan surrendered a $2400 envelope plus $32 in change before the robbers fled in a waiting car.
Chicago police linked detective story reports a young actress Lola de Witt Stewart found clutching her dead child Fancy in the Hayes Hotel. The child appeared to have been dead about 24 hours. A lipstick note and a second note were found. Four white pills were sent to the crime lab. Mrs Stewart was hospitalized and did not speak to investigators.
Queen Elizabeth II awarded Dr. Albert Schweitzer the Order of Merit, joining President Eisenhower as a living foreign member. The honor, limited to 24 eminent Britons plus honorary foreigners, recognizes Schweitzer as a famed French philosopher, doctor and missionary for his global work.

Six children died in separate fires on Friday night and today in Ohio and New Jersey. In Wellston, Ohio, four Brown children aged 4, 3, 4, and 3 months perished and their parents were badly burned. a coal stove in the kitchen is suspected. In Lafayette Township near Newton, New Jersey, a 7-year-old boy and his 9-year-old brother died after a kerosene can exploded in a room. two other residents escaped as a two story frame building burned.
Nationalist warplanes attacked Chinese Communist craft northwest of Wuchiu in Formosa with two Red ships sunk and later three Nationalist planes reported as completely destroying a high speed torpedo boat at Pinghai Bay. Gunboat exchanges were reported near Wuchiu while Premier Yui vowed to defend Quemoy and the Matsus. The United States pledged defense of areas deemed necessary to hold Formosa and the Pescadores.
In a ten minute gun fight in the Togyu Mountains near Seoul five Communist terrorists from the Fighters Against America group and two Republic of Korea policemen were killed. Two policemen were wounded. One dead rebel was the chief of staff for the Cholla-Mado Province Communist Party. The group of 15 had been terrorizing villages in the southern Togryu Mountain area, about 100 miles south of Seoul.
Sunnerr Albert Woolson the 108 year old sole survivor of the Union Army is in improved condition at a hospital in Duluth. Doctors report he is no longer in danger and ate a good breakfast after a comfortable night. He was admitted Friday with lung congestion which has largely cleared.
The Daily Sketch reports Britain intends to test its first hydrogen bomb in the Antarctic. Officials refused comment but plan to locate a suitable site with wart ships and planes to secure it from Argentina and other expeditions. The House of Commons will be briefed next week on progress disclosed recently.
A new storm from the north may bring an inch more rain to coastal areas and up to three inches to mountains in Southern California. General rain is forecast tonight through Sunday as a storm moves eastward after dropping 1/2 inch in Long Beach. Downtown Los Angeles and nearby areas report moderate to heavy rainfall with mountain snow levels dropping to 4000 feet and expected to fall to 2000 feet by Sunday. Slippery roads caused traffic accidents injuring six people. One crash near Cherry Avenue involved a 20 year old driver from the USS Belle Grove and two passengers.
About 1,500 Marines of the First Marine Division boarded Navy transports in Inchon Harbor and will depart Korea this weekend for Camp Pendleton California. Earlier, 2,000 Marines left aboard ships to San Diego in a coordinated pullout as the U S 24th Army Division prepares to replace them on the front. The Leathernecks have spent over four and a half years with Eighth Army, dating to the July 1950 arrival at Pusan and the Inchon landing that followed.
Tokyo police thwarted Yukio Takasu a 19 year old who planned a 1955 kidnap of 9 year old Tadashi Hayakawa. He prepared a ransom demand 8000000 yen and risked police capture after arranging the boy’s abduction on a department store roof garden. The case ended as officers seized him and retrieved the briefcase.
Soviet Union exposed a new hard line at the five power disarmament conference through Radio Moscow, detailing concrete proposals and provoking Western warnings. British officials condemn the leak as breaking secrecy and risk undermining chances for agreement on scrapping nuclear weapons.
Mary Jean Halderman of Los Angeles, 24, was killed when a car driven by her fiancé Airman J C Edwin Paul Schnidlin went out of control on Highway 93 near Baker Grade. The car rolled onto a bank, threw Halderman out, then crushed her as it rolled back downhill. Schnidlin, attached to Edwards AFB, survived but shocked.
A speeding bus struck a tree in Vigo Spain today killing 29 of 40 aboard as flames engulfed the vehicle. Relatives of the dead attempted to lynch the driver but police intervened and saved him from the mob.
Patricia Spangler 27, a private secretary for Lee S. Mytinger of Mytinger and Casselberry, returned from a 6000 mile trip and was jailed on suspicion of stealing 6050 from her employer. Investigators say she forged checks between Oct 28 and Feb 4 and admitted stealing 3000 to 3500 but evidence shows total 6050. She faces four or five counts of grand theft.
In Appomattox County scene of Evergreen killings Frank Mayberry 49 shot his brother in law and a physician then fought a 90 minute gun battle with about 30 officers. He was wounded and captured charged with two counts of murder. Victims were Jack Tucker 40 and Dr David Christian LA 34. Authorities unsure of motive.
Civil Defense Administrator Val Peterson told Congress much of U S thinking on defense against massive bomb attack is obsolete and possibly dangerous Security Chief Kefauver urged a new assistant defense secretary for civil defense. Peterson noted Col Barney Beers leads civil defense planning at the Pentagon and warned a rain of atomic bombs on many cities would cause chaos He cited Minneapolis-St Paul New York Chicago Milwaukee and San Francisco and emphasized mass civilian evacuation as a key protection aligned with the President’s highway program aim.
