Twin Engine DC3 Safest Plane of Decade But Margin Drops With Age
A Freeman CAB study covers July 1 1947 through December 31 1954 showing the DC3 logged over 7 244 000 revenue hours, twice the DC4 and over one third of all types. It notes the DC3 remained dominant in revenue hours but its margin of safety declined with age as airlines replaced DC3s with larger faster aircraft. The report highlights 1954 as the year its margin rose or fell and compares four engine planes rates to the DC3.
