Dulles Pushes Peace Policy Amid Congressional Doubts

Secretary of State Dulles urged support for a second push toward peace, citing the Big Four Berlin talks. He met House Foreign Affairs Committee and briefing lawmakers amid lingering doubts. Twelve Autos and Bus Smash Up at Beach City

Twelve automobiles and a Greyhound bus, westbound on Coast Highway, piled up in chain reaction crashes half a mile west of Highway 39 in Huntington Beach. Five people hurt, eight cars towed. The initiating driver fled. Nellia Joyce Morgan of Ojai rear ended the stalled car. The bus driver Leonard Cattrell remained uninjured. Morgan had severe facial cuts. others suffered bruises only. Tow trucks cleared the scene for over two hours as traffic flowed in two lanes.

Ailing Pope Pius Faces Health Struggles at Vatican

Vatican reports Pope Pius the head of the Roman Catholic Church has renewed difficulties eating and rising anxiety about his health. For over a month he suffers a gastric ailment and recent statements show hopes for oral nourishment are uncertain. The pope’s condition remains unstable and dependent on his ability to eat.

Bomb wrecks Communist office near Paris in blast

A bomb exploded at 3:30 a.m. in front of the door of the Communist party headquarters in the suburb of Neuilly sur Seine near Paris. One person was injured. Leaflets and pamphlets littered the street as the interior of the offices was badly damaged and many neighboring windows shattered.

Man Survives 46 Days Adrift at Sea in Dinghy

Latvian-born Viktors Zvejnieks, 28, staggered ashore north of Cairns after 46 days at sea in a 12-foot dinghy without a paddle. He drifted about 450 miles through the Coral Sea, trapped rain water, lived on seaweed and a small shark, and was hospitalized in Cairns.

Indicted 18 on Five Ship Fraud Counts

A federal grand jury indicted 18 individuals and seven corporations on five counts tied to surplus WWII ships. Among the named defendants is former Rep. Joseph Casey of Massachusetts. The sealed indictments date from April 23 and target alleged conspiracy and improper stock transfers without Maritime Commission approval.

Heat Record Falls As Long Beach Tops Southern California

A daily heat record was set today with a 90 degree peak at 12 30 pm surpassing the February 23rd 84 degree mark from 1921. The U S Weather Bureau five day outlook expects continued warmth to Thursday as February runs about nine degrees above the 60 5 degree normal. Other readings statewide include Riverside 95 Needles 4 San Bernardino 38 Victorville 67 and Los Angeles sites ranging from 81 to 86.

Woman Up All Night on Bus to Fight Parking Fine

Peggy Marshall of Emery Park Arizona traveled by bus from Tucson to Long Beach to contest a no parking ticket in Long Beach Municipal Court. She posted 19 bail, plans to represent herself, and insists she will stay as long as needed to win. She faces Judge Percy D. Hight on the case for parking in a no parking zone on Pine Avenue near the Jergins Trust Building.

Ex FBI Agent Says Pentagon Communist Link Emerges

Senator McCarthy asserted that a Pentagon code room worker handling top secret messages was a dues paying Communist in the late 1940s. He tied FBI informant Mary Markward to Annie Lee Moss, now said to be in the Army Signal Corps code room, handling covert messages. Cohn said Moss would appear later as a witness.
