A Lakewood liquor store owner and an armed robber engaged in a rapid gun battle early this morning while three witnesses watched from outside. At least eight shots were fired, six by the owner and two by the gunman. Both bands fled in a sedan, with bystanders giving chase briefly as deputies investigated.
A second man died from injuries after a pilotless target plane struck the destroyer Rupertus off San Diego. Seaman Edward Lee O Hanlon of San Mateo died at Naval Hospital. Harvey G. Braine of Fort Lauderdale was killed instantly when the four foot drone hit gun turret No 1 during antiaircraft practice. The Rupertus, based at Long Beach, apparently lost radio control of the drone.
A downtown San Pedro fire destroyed the block center causing about 75000 in damage as flames driven by wind menaced homes. A mother identified as Florine Garsen of 337 West Ich Street carried three sleeping children to safety amid flying embers and shattered glass.

The Secret Service arrested two Department of Agriculture workers for counterfeiting $10 bills. Martin T. Storey, 47, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, and Mary Watson, 55, of Washington, D C, were named. Agents found copper plates and a printing press. Storey admitted making plates and burning an initial run after deeming it not good enough.
In New York a Brooklyn National City Bank branch manager Charles Tietjen grappled with a man who burst in Friday and claimed to be carrying dynamite. The intruder wore two flare devices on his body, threatened to blow up the bank, but was tackled by the manager and a guard. Police identified the suspect as Salvatore Mangialomini, 32, of Hicksville, N.Y., booked for attempted robbery. Officials said the devices were flare-like alarms, not real explosives.

In Alabama a family near Tuscumbia lost a home and faced injuries to a husband and six children. A Mississippi twister near Greenville injured Mrs. L M Quick as a Glen Allan house collapsed.
In Pusan Korea, thirty American soldiers were injured, two seriously, after a fight among inmates in an Army stockade. An official Army statement cited internal dissension and a revolt against stockade discipline as causes. Lt Col Edwin Weisman said a stricter discipline policy had just begun, and MPs restored order within about an hour.

Walter Gould, 13, of Lawndale, left a Cabrillo Beach Sunday School event in a small rowboat. The craft drifted a mile out to sea as winds and current pushed it toward breakwater. A Coast Guard cutter towed him ashore after 45 minutes adrift. Walter said he now wants to be a sailor.
Franklinville NY four Niagara University students disappeared en route from Buffalo to St Bonaventure College eight days ago. Their rented Stinson van crashed in a wooded gully eight miles east of Franklinville. Farmers found wreckage and authorities believe all four are dead after the plane struck a tree.
United Nations bomber planes struck Communist targets in northwest Korea as Sabrejet fighters claim decisive air superiority. In eight days of combat, Sabres destroyed or damaged 10 MiG-15 jets, boosting total MiG casualties to 49 with one Sabre loss. Ground forces repelled a planned Chinese assault near T-Bone Hill, massing 500 enemy troops as patrols reported reinforcements and artillery.
Five year-old Miriam Pavey pretended to battle a dragon when she stabbed a toy sword into an electric heater. The heater short circuited, melted lead and cable, caused gas piping damage, and sparked multiple explosions that set the home on fire. Miriam was not injured as firemen contained the blaze.
Washington reports that Russia agreed to accept Charles E. Bohlen as the new U S ambassador to Moscow. Eisenhower is expected to send his nomination to the Senate for confirmation. Bohlen, fluent in Russian, previously served as President Roosevelt’s wartime interpreter at meetings with Joseph Stalin and would replace George F. Kennan who was recalled last October.
In El Reno Oklahoma a night FBI clerk who mails wanted circulars identified Theodore Richard Byrd Jr 27 as a top fugitive. Byrd allegedly passed over 40000 in counterfeit checks while posing as a doctor or naval officer. He was arraigned in Oklahoma City on interstate transportation of stolen property with bond set at 50000 and jailed when unable to post.

Paratrooper Jim Bodner, 18, of Mission City British Columbia, hung from a rifle tied to his combat pack by a life sling at 5000 feet during Exercise Bulldog near Fort Norman. The rifle snagged on the plane as it passed, the line was cut on the third pass, Bodner plunged free, but his chute opened and he landed safely. He was treated for shock and exposure at a hospital.
