First Plane in Fleet of Flying Radar Stations On East Coast
The first flying radar plane will depart McClellan AFB for the East Coast by March 1, heading to Otis AFB in Massachusetts to lead a fleet of Continental Air Defense Lockheed Super Constellations. The system will extend radar coverage hundreds of miles offshore to provide warning and time to deploy interceptors, with training ahead as the 551st Aircraft Early Warning and Control Wing stands up at Otis. Overall radar net aims to cover the entire East Coast.
