West Germans Refuse New Pay for Western Troops

West Germany will stop cash payments for Western troop support after the current arrangement ends May 5, a finance ministry spokesman said. The Western allies requested negotiations on future costs, but Bonn will not agree to further payments. The Paris treaties require Bonn to cover certain costs while the Western troops remain in Germany, though allied non cash services continue. If no agreement is reached, Western allies face hundreds of millions in additional expenses, with Britain and the U.S. each facing large yearly costs. France and Britain do not make cash contributions for NATO troop upkeep.
