Lakewood Renumbering Deferred by Supervisors
Lakewood Mayfair renumbering to conform with the county master plan was deferred for further study for two or three years. Supervisor William A. Smith said protests from residents delayed the Mayfair plan, with similar concerns in Long Beach. A renumbering committee handles details, and officials note mail routing issues between Bellflower Long Beach and Los Angeles and the postal districts. Uniform numbering is seen as reducing confusion and aiding locating homes, with calls for Long Beach and Pasadena to join the system as new subdivisions arise.

City May Abandon Probst Employerating System
The Long Beach Civil Service Commission weighs replacing the Probst rating system for city workers with a merit based method. Probst, in use since 1931, is feared to be too complex and indirect, with over 100 items and a rigid A to E scale. The Long Beach Employees Association advocates abolition in 1948 to improve fairness and supervisor collaboration, citing mechanical scoring and delayed feedback. The new plan aims to simplify rater duties and clearly show employee class, plus focus on work quality, job fit, and overall value to the department.
