House Appropriations Back Postal Budget With Curb Urged
The House Appropriations Committee recommended 2.9739 billion dollars for the Post Office Department for the new fiscal year, urging action to curb the growing postal deficit. The bill also funds the Treasury, Tax Court, and other agencies, and falls short of President Eisenhower’s request by about 26 million. The panel notes interest on the national debt rising and calls for higher postal rates to balance costs. The total committee allocations exceed current year funding by hundreds of millions. The narcotics bureau, Secret Service, and Coast Guard allocations were also set, increasing staffing and equipment.
