Truman to Seek Large Luxury Tax Increases
Washington February 1 President Truman plans to ask Congress for substantial excise tax boosts on luxuries including whisky wine beer and cigarettes to fund defense costs. He outlined a two package proposal totaling about 16.509 billion dollars with a quick 10 billion package and higher excise rates on vehicles gasoline and certain goods to pay for the defense program. Senator Byrd suggested trimming non-defense outlays by 7 billion would reduce new tax needs to about 10 billion.
