Helicopter Rescues 14 From Sea After Japanese Freighter Breaks Up

Airman Rescued After 24 Hours On Canyon Ledge
Donald Ellison of Tucson spent a day and night crouched on a two foot ledge in the Catalina Mountains to avoid a 175 foot drop. A four man rope team finally lowered him to safety after rescuers and Arizona Daily Star staff shouted for help. He was shaken but uninjured, saying he looked forward to walking back.

Christmas weekend traffic toll hits record high
The nation logged a record 605 traffic deaths during the long Christmas weekend, with 68 fires and 105 from other accidents. A Marine from Camp Pendleton, Cpl John L Bake, was killed in a pickup crash on Werde Low and Woodruff in North Hollywood, the only Christmas holiday traffic fatality. The weekend began Friday at 6 p.m. and ended Monday midnight, the all time traffic death record for a holiday period.

GORMAN CALIF. Mrs Dean W Marshall of El Monte and her husband were killed when their plane crashed two miles northwest of Gorman about 1 am. The couple, parents of five, had left Bakersfield Monday afternoon for Los Angeles after visiting Marshall’s sister, Mrs Doris West.
